Why Compost?

Composting uses the natural process of decay to change organic wastes into a valuable humus-like material. PA recycling goal is 35% of municipal waste by 2003. National Composting Council estimates the average U.S. household generates 650 pounds of compostables every year. Limited landfill space should be reserved for materials that cannot be recycled or composted. Garbage handling is the 4th largest expense for many cities and composting can reduce those costs.

There are certain organic materials that should be avoided in a backyard compost pile. To find out what these are and answers to other questions about composting, plan to attend one of the above workshops.

You must pre-register for the workshops by calling the Clarion County Extension Office at 814-223-9028. All pre-registered participants will receive a FREE compost bin while supplies last.
